In development · London planned first

Find a travel buddy. Women only.

We are building a place for women to find a travel companion, with ID and selfie checks planned for every member. It is not live yet. Join the waitlist and we will tell you when we launch. London is our planned first city.

The survey had about 2,800 respondents in two groups: about 2,000 women who had travelled solo and about 800 who had not. The page does not say which group each figure comes from, so we cannot say how many women each percentage covers. It is run by Solo Female Travelers, a company that also runs women-only tours, and it does not publish its sampling method. Read these figures as a guide, not a measurement of all women.

Why this exists

Solo travel is brilliant. Some of it is harder than it needs to be.

Three worries come up again and again in the survey. They are what we are designing around.

LEG-01 · SAFETY

It doesn’t always feel safe

68% worry about personal safety when travelling solo. Among Gen Z respondents it is 82%, against 59% of Boomers. We want to help you meet a companion before you go.

LEG-02 · COST

Going alone costs more

68% worry about higher costs compared with splitting them with a companion. One market report puts accommodation prices about 22% above 2019. Two people can share a room.

LEG-03 · COMPANY

There’s nobody to go with

58% say they travel solo because they have nobody to go with. That is a matching problem, and we think it can be solved.

How it is planned to work

One route, four legs.

1 · VERIFY

Check in first

Planned: every member passes an ID and live-selfie check before she can message anyone.

2 · MATCH

Same place, same dates

Planned: search other members by destination, dates, budget and travel style. A filter, not a mystery algorithm.

3 · CHAT

Talk before you travel

Planned: chat with the members you match with, free of charge. We think paying to talk is a poor fit for a trust-based network.

4 · MEET

Meet, then review

Planned: meet in public places, set a trip check-in, and leave a review afterwards so trust builds over time.

On the record: FemaleTravelBuddy is not live. Apart from the waitlist, none of the features on this page exist yet. They are what we plan to build, and the waitlist is how we decide which cities to open after London. Nothing here is a promise of a launch date.

Safety

Verification is planned as the entrance. These are the safety tools we plan to build.

An ID check shows that a member passed a check. It does not mean she is safe to travel with, and no app can promise that. Meet in public, tell someone your plans, and trust your own judgement.

ID

ID and selfie check

We plan to match a government ID to a live selfie and show a “checked” badge on profiles.

Planned
PR

Privacy you can read

We plan to collect as little as we can, say plainly what we keep, and give you a way to delete it.

Planned
CHK

Trip check-ins

We plan to let you set a check-in time. If you miss it, your trusted contacts would get an alert.

Planned
LOC

Location, to your people

We plan to let you share your location with a few trusted contacts during a trip. Never public.

Planned
SOS

SOS alerts

We plan to let you send an alert to your contacts. How well it works abroad depends on phone coverage, and we will explain the limits before launch.

Planned
REV

Reviews after trips

We plan to let members review a trip together, so trust builds from real journeys.

Our working plan

  • Joining the waitlist is free
  • Creating a profile and chatting to matches: we plan to keep these free
  • The safety tools will be free for every member
  • How we cover running costs is not decided yet. We will say before launch
Join the waitlist

No prices or member limits are fixed. We will publish the details before launch.

Why we have not set a price

We have not asked enough travellers what they would pay for, and we would rather ask first than guess. We plan to ask waitlist members before we set prices. You can ask us to remove you at any time.

About

A small project, at the planning stage.

FemaleTravelBuddy is an early-stage project to build a women-only travel-buddy platform. We are opening the waitlist to learn where women want it first. London is our planned first city.

Questions, ideas or a request to be removed from the list: hello@femaletravelbuddy.com.

FAQ

Straight answers.

Is it live?
No. We are building it. Only the waitlist is live, so we can tell you when it launches and decide which city comes after London.
Where will it launch first?
London is our planned first city, not a promise. After that, the cities that sign up most are likely to come first. In the survey, women named London, Paris, New York, Rome, Barcelona and Tokyo as their favourite cities for a solo trip.
What will “verified” mean?
The plan is a government-ID match against a live selfie. We have not built it yet, and before we ask anyone for ID we will publish exactly how it works, what we keep and for how long. A check is meant to confirm who someone is. It is not a guarantee of how she will behave.
Is this a dating app?
No. It is meant for finding a travel companion. Verification is planned to confirm that members are women, not to match people romantically.
Will it be free?
We have not set prices. Our plan is to keep profiles and chat free, and the safety tools will be free for every member. How we cover running costs is not decided yet. See the pricing section.
Why an app when women-only travel groups already exist?
Groups are where many women already find advice: 77% of survey respondents trust advice from solo female travel Facebook groups. We want to add a way to search by destination and dates, with checks on who is in it.
What do you do with my email?
We store it with your optional city, the sign-up date, the country your connection comes from and any campaign tags in your link. We use them to send launch updates and to decide which cities to open after London. Full detail is in the privacy notice, and you can ask for removal at hello@femaletravelbuddy.com.
